Surfing is a physical activity that requires skill and balance, and it is important for beginners to have some basic skills. Here are some tips for surfing:
Turning Technique: The turning technique in surfing involves changing direction by rotating the waist and feet in a single motion. If you want to turn left, both feet and lower legs turn in the water in a clockwise direction; if you want to turn right, your legs turn in a counterclockwise direction. You can hold the edge of the board with both hands to stabilise your centre of gravity, or grab the edge of the board with one hand and flick the water with the other to speed up the turn.
Rise and Ride Technique: When the waves propel you and the board to have a forward speed, start to rise. Find your ribs with the palms of your hands and place them flat on the face of the board, bracing your body and standing with your feet shoulder-width apart, one in front of the other. Keep your upper body upright and bend your knees slightly to absorb bumps.
Paddling Technique: When paddling, keep your head up and look straight ahead, and paddle alternately with your hands along the sides of the board. The action is similar to the freestyle stroke in swimming, with the hands paddling from the front to the end. Paddle backward along the sides of the board alternately, adjusting the rhythm of breathing left and right.
Wave Crossing Technique: One of the best ways to cross a wave in a small wave or white foam is to brace your hands on the strings of the board and hold your entire body up to let the white foam flow underneath you. The technique is to swim as hard as you can in the direction of the wave, and when the wave is about a metre in front of the nose of the board, put your hands on your chest and brace your feet on the tail of the board. When you feel that the wave is going to cover you, put your hands on the nose of the board and press down, kick the tail of the board with one foot and lift the other foot straight up into the air.
FALLING TIP: When falling into the water, try to get on your knees and get off the board as slowly as possible. This helps to minimise the impact on the body and maintain balance.
Board selection: For beginners, it is important to choose a board that is appropriate for your height and weight. Generally speaking, shorter surfboards are easier to grasp and manoeuvre.
Safety precautions: It is very important to know and follow the rules and etiquette of the local waters before surfing. Also, wear appropriate surfing gear such as long trousers and long clothing and sun protection to protect yourself from injury.
By practising these techniques and paying attention to safety precautions, beginners can better enjoy surfing and improve their skill level.
